Our family’s catching a flight from our part-time home in the Philippines to the opposite side of Asia, touching down in the city and emirate of Dubai. Even though this is our first time in the UAE, we’re bypassing the obvious tourist traps in search of some Arabian adventure that’s more off the beaten path. So we’re about to explore Dubai by sea… by air… and by land.

We’ve spent the past week exploring the beautiful country of South Africa and while the history, food, landscapes have been captivating, I’m definitely craving another dose of extreme adventure. Private islands are the ultimate indulgence for the rich and famous. And when we spent a week at Francis Ford Coppola’s Turtle Inn resort in Belize last year, the staff told us about Coral Caye—his private island that’s just a half hour boat ride off the coast. And when they said our family could have it all to ourselves for 3 days, we knew we had to see if the secluded beach life is all it’s cracked up to be.

Our recent tour of New England led us to coastal Maine, where we HAD to get our hands on some tasty local lobster. But there was no way we were gonna just order from a menu when we could instead put our kids to work AND get a behind-the-scenes look at this strangely secretive industry. So we chartered a boat and a licensed lobster fisherman to take us out on the ocean in search of our next meal.

With all of our travels to exotic locations and all of the adventurous excursions we undertake while there, we found ourselves falling into a false sense of security. But just because we have a professional guide and just because thousands of others may have done the same thing prior to us doesn't mean a particular activity is safe.

In what was certainly our most exciting travel day so far, our yacht captain took us to 3 Exumas hot spots: The Washing Machine, swimming in the middle of a shark feeding frenzy at Compass Cay, and playing with the swimming pigs on the world famous Pig Island!
