First impressions of Milan, Italy
This week, we’ve retraced Leonardo da Vinci’s steps from nearly 550 years ago as we’ve left Tuscany’s Florence and trekked north to the finance, fashion, food and design Mecca of Milan in Italy’s Lombardy region. After multiple visits to Florence that have made it one of our family’s favorite cities in the world, this is our first time in Milan—and we can’t wait to see if this city is every bit as inspiring and magical. So let’s start exploring…
Milan is often considered the world capital of industrial design, fashion and architecture. When people talk about Italian furniture and interior design, they’re really referencing Milan itself. We had first-hand experience with this industry when the kitchen and bathrooms in our Coronado Island home were outfitted with Milano creations.
Some of the world’s most famous Italian fashion brands are headquartered here, like Armani, Gucci, Versace, Valentino, Prada, and Dolce & Gabbana. And the twice-a-year Milan Fashion Week, one of the most important events in international fashion, helps cement this city as perhaps the most important in fashion, competing only with Paris, New York, and London.
In addition to Italian, millions of people in this area of Italy speak the Milanese dialect or other other variations of the region.
