They told us to avoid this Johannesburg neighborhood (we loved it)
After 3 years exploring the Americas, Europe and Asia, we just arrived in Africa for the first time. And even though we’re spending our entire 18-day trip in the country of South Africa, we really wanna get a taste of the cultures that span the continent. So to kick things off, we’re leaving Melrose Arch—one of the nicest neighborhoods in Johannesburg—and heading to Yeoville—one of the poorest. It may be notorious for its high levels of crime and poverty, but it also boasts a diverse pan-African culture that’ll provide an eclectic backdrop to our first real experience in the city.
Devouring Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
This week we’re in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, known as a mecca for soaring skyscrapers, big-budget Hollywood films, and one of the most colorful cultures we’ve encountered in the past 3 years. No place captures the flavor of that culture more than the streets of the city, so we’re braving the humidity, dodging the afternoon showers, and heading out in search of the top sites and bites.
Top Jakarta Street Foods at the Top Jakarta Fair
From huge barbecued squid to tiny fried crabs, we’re about to devour another iconic Asian city. On our current trip’s last full day in Southeast Asia, we’re exploring the food, culture, and people of Indonesia at the annual, month-long Jakarta Fair. This IS the Indonesian capital AND the most populous island in the world, so we’re searching for the most highly-recommended sites and bites that represent the vibrant flavor profile of this captivating city. We ate the poisonous puffer fish at Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market
Tokyo is home to some of the most fascinating spectacles in existence and one of those is here at Tsukiji: the largest fish market in the world. In the wee morning hours you can find individual tuna selling for as much as $3 million. But we’re not that hungry or that rich, so we’re in search of other delicacies, like the famous fugu fish, which, with a toxin 1000 times more deadly than cyanid, can kill you just by touch. Will our gastro-adventurous family risk eating it just for bragging rights?

After a few great days amongst the historic charm of Kyoto, we've traveled 50km southwest to the bustling Japanese metropolis of Osaka. Known as "Japan's Kitchen," it's no wonder this city's famous for its fantastic food scene. We’re still here in the best city in the world (according to Travel & Leisure) and part of what makes San Miguel so cool is its eclectic food scene. So we’re taking a little break from filming our upscale restaurant tour to search out the great eats that were most recommended by locals. These bites may not be as adventurous as some of the street foods we just tried in Cebu City, but they’re bound to be every bit as delicious.

Devouring Singapore—from Hawker Centers to Michelin Stars
Singapore is a relatively young city-state that’s about 74% Chinese, 14% Malay, and 9% Indian. That means they have no single official language and very little in the way of official national symbols. But because the culture of this area goes back at least a thousand years, the one thing you’ll find that is purely Singaporean is its food.
